DEWITT — It took a while for the Lady Jackrabbits to get rolling against DeWitt on Tuesday but Lonoke came away with a 46-26 win over the Dragonettes in the season opener.

Lonoke led 18-17 at halftime before outscoring DeWitt 19-3 in the third quarter.

Lonoke coach Nathan Morris, staring his ninth year, attributed the slow to start to it being the first game.

“It was a good crowd,” he said. “There were a lot of people from DeWitt and a lot of people from Lonoke traveled. It was the first time under the lights. We didn’t play a benefit scrimmage game. It was our first time playing someone else.”

Morris said his team was tired physically and mentally by halftime.

“That showed up in the foul trouble we got in,” he said. “Those mistakes will have to be corrected. But I liked the way we competed in the second half and the ball got pushed down the floor.”

Morris said the way the ball was pushed in the second half was a bright spot for his team.

“We worked on pushing the ball up the floor and were able to do that,” he said. “Sometimes we didn’t make good decisions when we did that. But the ball was at least in a position to do that. We will convert that with more practice.”

Lonoke scored the first 10 points of the second half to lead 28-17. Callie Whitfield scored four during the run while Eboni Willis, Kerasha Johnson and Amanda Sexton scored two each.

Lonoke’s largest lead was 24 points at 44-20 with 4:24 left in the game.

Jarrelyn McCall led Lonoke with 12 points. Whitfield added nine. Sexton scored seven. Johnson and Ashlyn Allen had five apiece. Willis added four while Riely Rowton scored two.

Jr. Rabbits 34, DeWitt 33

Lonoke’s Conner Linton hit a putback with 1:39 left to give his team the lead for good as Lonoke beat DeWitt 34-33 in the season opener.

Linton’s basket made the score 32-31. After a blocked shot, Lonoke’s Isaac Toney hit two free throws with 1:14 left to make the score 34-31.

DeWitt cut the deficit to 34-33 and had a couple of chances to take the lead but turned the ball over with 8.6 seconds left.

Lonoke inbounded the ball in the backcourt and DeWitt was never called for a foul as time expired.

Toney led Lonoke with 12 points. Linton had nine. TaMarrea Moore had five. Casey Martin scored four. Haven Hunter and Kylan Branscomb scored two points each.

Jr. Lady Rabbits 29, DeWitt 28

Lonoke’s Keiunna Walker rebounded a DeWitt free throw and drove the length of the floor to hit a layup, giving the Junior Lady Jackrabbits a 29-28 win in the season opener.

DeWitt led 10-8 after one quarter and 22-20 at halftime.

Annie Whisnant led Lonoke with eight points. Walker and Kylie Hobson had seven apiece. Maddie Pool scored four while Destiny Bracy scored three.
