Lonoke had a chance to win in the bottom of the seventh but could not get the timely hit as Southside Batesville won the 4A-2 softball district tournament title 3-2 Saturday at the Lonoke Ball Park.
Lonoke took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Charley Jo Chesney reached on an error and scored on a triple by Jessy Lewis, who scored on an overthrow on the same play.
That score held up until the top of the fourth when Southside scored twice to tie the game at 2-2. Caitlin DuBose singled and scored. Maigan Johnson reached on an error and scored.
Southside then took a 3-2 lead in the top of the sixth. Payton Jo Shaw reached on an error and scored on a single by Libbie Pratt.
Lonoke got the tying run to third base in the bottom of the seventh. Amanda Sexton led off with a walk and stole second base. She went to third on a sacrifice bunt by Candace James. Gracie Cole then hit the ball hard but lined out to the pitcher. Brooke Jackson was then hit by a pitch but she and Sexton were stranded on base as Jasalyn Truelove hit the ball hard but it was snagged by the pitcher to end the game.
Lonoke had four hits in the game. Lewis had two; Jarrelyn McCall and Cole had the other hits.
Chesney gave up three runs — all unearned — and six hits in seven innings of work. She struck out four.
Lonoke left five runners on base.
Lonoke advanced to title game with a 4-1 win over Stuttgart on Friday.
Both team scored once in the first inning. Truelove led off with a single and scored on an error.
Lonoke took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth. McCall singled and scored on an error.
The Lady Jackrabbits pushed their lead to 4-1 when Sexton hit a two-run homer in the sixth. Haylee Whitehurst walked and scored on Sexton’s homer.
Lonoke had nine hits. McCall, Sexton and Jackson had two hits each.
Chesney got the win. He gave up one run on five hits. She struck out four.
