The Lonoke Junior Jackrabbits improved to 2-0 in 4A-2 conference play with a 20-6 win over the Newport Pups last week.
“It was a good, tough win,” Lonoke coach Darrick Lowery said of the game, which was his team’s third consecutive win after dropping the season opener at Beebe.
The game was scoreless after one quarter. Lonoke’s Isaac Toney recovered a Newport fumble at the 50-yard line in the second quarter. That led to his team taking a 6-0 lead when Michael Hodge scored on a 5-yard run.
The Junior Jackrabbits pushed the lead to 12-0 after an interception by Casey Martin in the third quarter. It was his second of the game. That led to Toney scoring on a 1-yard run.
Newport’s only touchdown of the game came on its ensuing possession, cutting the Lonoke lead to 12-6.
The Junior Jackrabbits pushed their lead to 20-6 in the fourth quarter when Logan Dozier threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to Connor Linton. Toney scored the two-point conversion.
Lonoke’s Ricky Nichols sealed the victory when he intercepted a Newport pass late in the game.
Toney led Lonoke in rushing with 127 yards on nine carries. Hodge had 41 yards on five carries.
Dozier completed 4 of 9 passes for 56 yards. Linton caught two passes for 30 yards. Kameron Cole caught two passes for 26 yards.
