Jackrabbits knock off Panthers in conference opener

The Lonoke Jackrabbits opened 4A-2 conference play with a 7-2 win over the Heber Springs Panthers on March 20 at the Lonoke Ball Park.

Lonoke pitchers Mikey Shinn and Christian James combined for a six hits and 10 strikeouts over seven innings of work. Shinn struck out eight in 5 1/3 innings.

“It’s always good to jump out to 1-0 in conference,” Lonoke coach Darrick Lowery said. “I thought Mikey pitched extremely well and our defense played solidly behind him. I’m very proud of our guys on an all-around, well-played game.”

The Panthers scored single runs in the second and sixth innings.

Lonoke scored twice in the first. James singled and scored. Nick Graves also scored in the inning.

The Jackrabbits added three runs in the second. Pierce Johnson was hit by a pitch and scored. Graves and Nick Watson both singled and scored.

Lonoke added two more runs in the fourth. Johnson waked and scored on a sacrifice fly Graves. James doubled and scored on a single by Shinn.

Shinn led the Jackrabbits at the plate, going 3 for 4 with three singles and an RBI.

Watson, Graves, Elijah Seigrist and James had two hits each. Also collecting hits were Cody Martin and Casey Martin.

The Jackrabbits are playing in the Xtra Innings Classic this week in northeast Arkansas.

“We have our work cut out for us this week in the Xtra Innings Tournament in Jonesboro,” Lowery said. Lonoke plays Jonesboro Westside today at 4 p.m.

The Jackrabbits also collected wins in a tournament at Morrilton two weeks ago.

Lonoke beat Pottsville 8-5 and Atkins 11-5.

In the win over Pottsville, the Jackrabbits scored seven runs in the sixth inning to win. Scoring were Johnson, James, Graves, Watson, Shinn, Casey Martin, Seigrist, and Cody Martin.

Watson also scored in the fourth.

In the win over Atkins, Shinn was 3 for 3 with two runs scored and four RBIs. Also scoring were Johnson, James, Graves (three), Savonte Rountree, Cody Martin and Casey Martin.
