The Lonoke Jackrabbits are “1-0” after pulling away from Stuttgart for a 71-48 win over the Ricebirds on Tuesday night at the Gina Cox Center.

Lonoke is now 16-4 overall and 6-3 in 4A-2 league play.

“Before tonight’s game, we had four teams with three losses,” Lonoke coach Dean Campbell said of his conference. “It’s the old cliche … every night, we want to be 1-0 after our game. That’s what we talked about. Even coach [assistant Heath Swiney] piped up and said ‘we’re 1-0.’ Friday night, we want to be 1-0. We can buy into that, come together and good things will happen.”

Lonoke struggled at times in the first half, leading 27-23 at halftime. Lonoke’s Brenton Bryant hit a three-pointer at the buzzer.

Stuttgart kept it close in the third quarter, trailing 40-36 with 1:09 left. Lonoke’s Jamel Rankin converted a three-point play with 18.4 seconds left to give the Jackrabbits a 43-36 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Lonoke led 56-43 following an alley-oop dunk by Blake Mack with 3:49 left in the game. Mack hung on the rim after being bumped by a Stuttgart player. However, an official called a technical foul on Mack for hanging on the rim. Stuttgart’s Lexus Hobbs hit both free throws to make the score 56-45.

The Ricebirds weren’t able to convert after the technical foul. Rankin was fouled and he hit 1 of 2 free throws with 3:24 left to give the Jackrabbits a 57-45 lead.

Following the possession, Campbell said something to the official who gave Mack his technical foul and Campbell was hit with one of his own.

Hobbs then hit 1 of 2 free throws to make the score 57-46 with 3:18 left. From there, the Jackrabbits went on a 14-0 run to lead 71-46 with 40 seconds left.

“Our kids came over and said ‘Coach, we’ve got this and we’ll take care of it,’” Campbell said. “And they did it. We’ve got to have more of that kind of mentality early. And I think we will.

“We’re still trying to come together.”

Mack led the Jackrabbits with 23 points. Rankin scored 17. Darius McCall scored 10. Brenton Bryant and Tykel Gray had eight points each. Jawaun Bryant had three. Darian Young scored two points.

Hobbs led Stuttgart with 19 points.
