Lonoke’s Riely Rowton goes around a defender during her team’s win over Marianna on Tuesday.

For most of the game, the Lonoke Lady Jackrabbits struggled against Marianna in 4A-2 conference play Tuesday night. However, the game wasn’t decided until the final seconds.

Lonoke scored the game’s final five points to beat the Lady Trojans 48-46.

Marianna led 46-43 following a basket with 1:22 left. Lonoke had a chance to inch closer but Jasalyn Truelove missed a jumper with 49 seconds left. Marianna then turned the ball over with 40.1 seconds left. That eventually led to Riely Rowton hitting 1 of 2 free throws with 31.6 seconds left to make the score 46-44.

Marianna turned the ball over near mid-court when Amanda Sexton deflected a pass. That led to Kerasha Johnson tying the game at 46-46 with 22 seconds left.

Another Marianna turnover led to Johnson giving the Lady Jackrabbits a 48-46 lead with 12 seconds left.

After a Lonoke timeout with 10.5 seconds left, Marianna’s Brittney Wade missed a three-pointer with four seconds left. Lonoke rebounded the miss, securing the victory.

Lonoke coach Nathan Morris said Marianna played his team tougher the second time around. Lonoke beat Marianna 55-41 earlier this month.

“They are all sophomores and they found a way to get it done against some seniors,” Morris said of the comeback. “And they finished it off by having the press and bouncing around and getting some life about them. That is a positive thing.

“Everything they are doing is a new experience.”

The score was tied 10-10 at the end of the first quarter. Lonoke led 12-10 following two free throws by Rowton. From there, the Lady Trojans scored nine in a row to lead 19-12. They led 23-18 at halftime.

Lonoke’s Callie Whitfield opened the third quarter with consecutive three-pointers to give her team a 24-23 lead. From there, the teams played evenly as the score was tied 32-32 after three quarters.

“The two big threes by Callie got us some life and got us back in it,” Morris said. “Down the stretch, we did a pretty good job of feeding Eboni [Willis] the ball into the post.”

Whitfield led Lonoke with 14 points. Willis had 10. Sexton added nine. Johnson had eight. Rowton added five. Haiden Jeter scored two.

Monica Young led Marianna with 15 points. Wade had 14.

The Lady Jackrabbits also beat Pine Bluff Dollarway 55-29 on Jan. 24 but lost at Southside Batesville 39-22 on Friday.

In the win over Dollarway, Lonoke led 11-9 after one quarter and 28-11 at halftime.

Whitfield led Lonoke with 15 points. Willis had 12. Rowton and Johsnon had six points each. Truelove had five. Jeter added four while Kaelin Whisnant scored two.

In the loss at Southside, Lonoke trailed 16-3 after one quarter and 23-11 at halftime.

Johnson led Lonoke with seven points. Willis had six. Sexton added four. Truelove and Rowton had two points each. Samaria James added a free throw.

Senior night

Lonoke will hosts its senior night festivities Friday as the Jackrabbits host Newport for three games.

The junior girls will play at 5 p.m. with the senior girls and senior boys to follow.

Senior players, trainers and cheerleaders will be recognized between the senior high games.
