Second grader wins statewide contest

Jacob Sedgebeer, a second grader at Lonoke Primary School, won first place in the Arkansas statewide “Stomp Out Smoking” essay contest. Second and third graders around the state were to “write a letter to a relative or friend” and tell them why they wished they would stop smoking, and how they would help them. Sedgebeer wrote to an uncle and told him that he, Jacob, would use his “Superpower Abilities” to help his uncle to stop smoking. Sedgebeer was awarded a Nintendo Wii. His teacher, Jennifer Lassiter, was awarded a $300 Walmart card to buy things for her classroom, and the school was awarded an assembly April 25. (Submitted photo)
