Murder charge filed in January homicide

Charges, including capital murder, were filed Wednesday, March 13, in Lonoke County Circuit Court, in the death of Hubert Dewayne Jackson, 27, of Little Rock. Jackson’s body was found Jan. 19 alongside a Lonoke County road.

Facing the capital murder charge is Jeremy Deshaun Davis, 30, of Lonoke. Prosecuting attorney Chuck Graham also filed charges of possession of firearm by certain persons, and tampering with physical evidence. Each is a felony. The enhancements of serious/violent habitual criminal, felony with firearm, and habitual criminal are included — enhancements, in the event of a conviction, are used to bring a severe penalty.

According to reports at the time, at about 10 p.m., Jan. 19, the sheriff’s office received a report of a man lying at the side of Bevis Road, near the intersection with Arkansas Highway 15, in rural Lonoke County.

According to a sheriff’s office press release at the time, the responding deputy found the body lying partially on the pavement, with a large amount of blood around the head. The man was determined to be dead; there were 9-millimeter casings in the area.

“Investigators responded and initiated a homicide investigation,” the report stated.

According to the affidavit, investigators learned from people close to Jackson that Davis and one other person were the last persons to be seen with Jackson.

Also, investigators were told that Davis had afterward said Jackson had died after being struck by a vehicle.

Another person told investigators of being approached by Davis to get some 9-millimeter rounds.

Other accounts told of seeing Davis with a handgun, and of saying he was going to kill someone who owed him money.

The affidavit notes that at the time Davis was saying Jackson had been killed, only sheriff’s investigators knew the identity of the person found on Bevis Road, no one outside the sheriff’s office had been notified of the death.

Various accounts noted in the affidavit told of a number of times that Davis said the Jackson owed [Davis] money, and he [Davis] was going to kill him.

Other accounts told of seeing Davis, on Jan. 19, with a 9-millimeter handgun, and there being a .22 caliber handgun and rifle nearby.

One of those interviewed told of speaking with Davis’ girlfriend on the night of the homicide, who said, “They would see Davis was going to do that night on the news.”

The affidavit noted that the Crime Lab reported Jackson had been shot with 9-millimeter and .22 guns.
