Karen James was appointed to the Lonoke School Board on Monday night during its regularly scheduled meeting.
Due to the death of her husband Chris, the board unanimously voted to appoint James to fill his position for the remainder of the term. Chris James served on the board for the past four years. James will represented zone 2, position 1 of the district for the district until school board elections are held Sept. 15.
The board also unanimously voted to appointed Eddie Pennington as secretary until new officers are appointed during the October meeting.
Teachers and staff members should expect a bonus this month, follow the board’s approval during the meeting. At the recommendation of superintendent Suzanne Bailey, the board unanimously approved the disbursement of funds for bonuses. Each employee staffed full time will receive a $500 bonus. Part-time staff will receive a $250 bonus. Bonus are expected to be paid out during August.
In an effort to remind the board and staff of the district’s mission and vision, Bailey presented the board with its update. According to the district’s mission statement, the mission of the Lonoke School District is to create an environment that provides all students with academic skills and responsible citizenship. The vision of the Lonoke School District is for students to become responsible and effective leaders of society.
Students in sixth through eighth grade will have new books this fall. The board unanimously approved the purchase of 600 Math In Focus books for the about of $38,400 from the Educators Book Depository.
Also during the meeting, the board unanimously voted to:
•Approve a board to board transfer for a student to attend the Cabot School District.
•Accept the resignation of Angela Roark as a HIPPY Home based educator
•Hire Mallory Jackson as physical education teacher, assistant volleyball and junior track coach
•Hire Tracy Skillern as a special education self-contained paraprofessional
•Hire Jena Reitz as high school math teacher
•Extend the contract of Amanda Rather from 11 months to 12 months
