Lady Bison hold off Brinkley in 2A-6 opener

Carlisle won 2 of 3 three games from Brinkley in the 2A-6 opener Monday at Bison Arena.

Lady Bison 51, Brinkley 47

After starting the season 1-4, Carlisle is now 1-0 where it counts the most — conference play.

Carlisle held off Brinkley for a 51-47 win to improve to 2-4.

The Lady Bison led 42-35 with 4:59 left in the game. Brinkley pulled to within one on a 6-0 run with 3:43 left.

Carlisle’s Presley Carter was fouled by Brinkley’s DeNasia Robinson with 3:15 left. Robinson was also called for a technical foul on the play. Carter took advantage of the fouls by hitting four free throws to push the lead to 46-41.

Carlisle’s Breanna Young then scored four in a row to push the lead to 50-41 with 2:07 left.

Brinkley’s Lauren Carroll broke the run with a three-pointer with 1:49 left. She then hit 1 of 2 free throws with 45.1 seconds left.

Carlisle’s Rachel Jones iced the game with a free throw with 28.6 seconds left to make the score 51-45.

“I told the girls there are 14 games and if you want to win a conference championship, you can’t drop one at home,” third-year Carlisle coach Jonathan Buffalo said. “They are one of the tougher teams in the conference. They are well-coached. They play hard. They’ve got a lot of athleticism and talent.”

Buffalo said Carter’s free throws with 3:15 left were “huge.”

“Those were big-time plays right there,” he said. “It was one of those type of games where you grind it out. That is all that matters right now.”

Early in the game, Carlisle fed the ball down low to Faith Walker, who led both teams with 30 points. She also hit four three-pointers in the game.

Young added 13 points. Carter scored seven while Jones added 1.

Carroll led Brinkley with 21 points.

Brinkley 49, Bison 18

The Carlisle Bison got off to a slow start in a 49-18 loss to Brinkley in the season opener Monday night.

Brinkley scored the game’s first 19 points before Brynden Weems hit a short jumper with 1:14 left in the first quarter.

Brinkley led 34-8 at halftime and 45-12 after three quarters.

Carlisle’s Nick Schafer hit a three-pointer to start the fourth quarter as the Bison outscored the Tigers 6-4 in the final eight minutes.

Schafer led the Bison with 11 points. Thomas McCallie had three. Weems and Cole Sheets had two points each.

Jr. Lady Bison 36, Brinkley 10

The Carlisle Junior Lady Bison outscored Brinkley 15-2 in the first quarter en route to a 36-10 win the conference opener Monday night.

Carlisle pushed its lead to 22-8 by halftime and 36-8 after three quarters.

Kylie Warren led Carlisle with 13 points. Nikita Harper had nine. Arius McClain scored six. Elex McClain had four. Journey Jennings scored two.

Poyen 48, Lady Bison 42

The Poyen Lady Indians held off Carlisle for a 48-42 win in the fifth-place game of the Harmony Grove Tournament on Saturday.

Faith Walker led Carlisle with 15 points. Breanna Young had 14. Kayla Golleher added five. Presley Carter scored three. Rachel Jones and Morgan Walter had two points each.
