Bison qualify for regionals; finish fourth in district tourney

For the eighth consecutive season, the Carlisle Bison baseball team has qualified for the regional tournament. They did so by beating Clarendon 16-1 in the quarterfinals of the 2A-6 district tournament May 1 at Hazen.

The Bison then lost to Hazen in the semifinals and Des Arc in the third-place game to finish fourth. They will play Magnet Cove in the first round of the East Region tournament Friday at 10 a.m. at Palestine.

If the Bison win, they will qualify for the Class 2A state tournament and play in the semifinals of the regional Saturday at noon. The third-place game is Monday at noon;. the finals are Monday at 2:30 p.m.

In the win over Clarendon, the Bison led 3-0 after two innings. Josh Mathis doubled and scored in the first. Thomas McCallie walked and scored in the second; Chance Richards reached on an error and also scored in the frame.

Clarendon’s lone run came in the top of the third. The Bison then plated eight runs in the bottom of the third. Scoring were Nick Schafer (twice), Dylan Brazeal, Jaden Daniels, McCallie, Richards, Tyler Young and Jacob Gordon. Carlisle scored five runs in the fourth to end the game. Scoring were McCallie, Richards, Mathis, Young and Gordon.

Schafer got the win for the Bison. He gave up one run on two hits in four innings of work. He struck out five in the victory.

Hazen then beat the Bison 5-4 in eight innings in the semifinals.

Carlisle led 4-1 heading into bottom of the seventh after Gordon hit a three-run homer in the top of the inning. Scoring on the play were Mathis and Young. McCallie had scored for Carlisle in the fifth.

Hazen tied the game with three runs in bottom of the seventh. They won the game with an unearned run in bottom of the eighth.

Carlisle had a chance to take the lead in the top of the eighth. Richards singled with two outs and stole second base but was stranded there to end the inning.

Des Arc won the third-place game 7-6 in eight innings.

The Bison led 2-0 after two innings. Daniels and Richards both scored in the second.

Des Arc tied it at 2-2 in the top of the third. Carlisle reclaimed the lead at 3-2 with a run in the bottom of the fourth. Richards singled and scored.

After Des Arc tied it at 3-3 in the top of the fifth, the Bison scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to lead 6-3. Scoring were Mathis, Young and Gordon.

The Eagles scored three times in the top of the seventh to tie it at 6-6.

Carlisle was retired in order in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into extra innings, were Des Arc plated an unearned run in the top of the eighth.

Carlisle had a chance to tie in the bottom of the eight but left runners in scoring position to end the game.
