The Carlisle Bison gave Clarendon a run for its money in the semifinals of the 2A-6 district tournament on Friday at Hughes but came up short, falling 58-54 to the Lions, who then defeated Hughes to win the tournament Saturday night.
The Bison led 14-8 after one quarter but the score was tied 27-27 at halftime.
The Lions then outscored the Bison by four points in the second half.
Carlisle coach William Rountree said he was interested in how his team would respond by playing Clarendon on Hughes’ court.
“I thought we responded very well,” he said. “We competed very well. I thought we didn’t get caught up in the atmosphere. I didn’t think we were intimidated. I thought we played well.”
Chris Hart led the Bison with 22 points. Deron Ricks added 16. Austin Reed scored seven. Dathan Hill and Chris Clayvon Edwards had four points each. Braden Reed added a free throw.
“We needed one more,” Rountree said, referring to the scoring outputs by Hart and Ricks. “And we didn’t quite get that.”
Rountree also said there were some possessions when his team didn’t get good shots.
The Bison play the Poyen Indians in the first round of the Class 2A East Region tournament at Bison Arena tonight at 5:30.
“I think we’ve got a good chance, playing at home,” Rountree said. “We need a big crowd Thursday night.”
Rountree said Bison fans are asked to wear black as the boys and girls teams play in consecutive games.
“It ought to be a good deal,” he said.
If the Bison win, they will play the winner of Clarendon and Cutter Morning Star on Friday at 5:30 p.m. The third-place game is Saturday at 1:30 p.m. The championship game is Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
If the Bison beat Poyen, they will qualify for the Class 2A state tournament next week at Marmaduke High School.
If the Bison win the regional, they will play Tuesday at 8:30 p.m. If they are second, they will play Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. If they are third, they will play Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. If they are fourth, they will play Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
