Bison fall to Bears in opener

The Carlisle Bison baseball team opened the 2014 season with a 15-5 loss to the Woodlawn Bears on Tuesday.

Carlisle led 1-0 after the first inning. Tyler Young, who, along with teammate Josh Mathis, signed with Ecclesia College in Springdale last month, led off the game by being hit by a pitch. He eventually scored the game’s first run.

The Bison added to their lead in the top of the third. Chance Richards singled and went to second and third on errors and eventually scored to give the Bison a 2-0 lead.

The Bears then came alive in bottom of the third, scoring 11 times to lead 11-2. Woodlawn then scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth to lead 15-2.

The Bison tried to get back into the game in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, Bradley Elder singled and eventually scored. Richards and Young were both hit by pitches and scored.

The Bison had another chance to score but Mathis was put out at the plate for the second out of the inning. Carlisle then left runners at first and third to end the game. Jacob Gordon was on third; Dylan Brazeal was on first.

Carlisle opens 2A-6 conference play today at Rockefeller Park with a doubleheader against Palestine-Wheatley. The first game begins at 4:30 p.m.
