The fifth grade students at Carlisle Elementary School partnered with the Lonoke County Extension Office last week to make a school garden. Keith Perkins and Sara Beth Waller spoke with the kids about the importance of agriculture in our lives. They helped students use math skills to determine how many rows would fit in their garden, how many plants could be planted in each row depending on the type of vegetable, and how much fertilizer each row needed. Teachers said they are looking forward to watching the garden grow, but more importantly, to watching their students grow as they learn to use their math skills while taking care of their garden. The fifth grade class will be accepting donations of garden equipment such as used or new water hoses, hoes, garden rakes, wheel barrows, ect.
