Carlisle Schools to bid on tourneys

The Carlisle School Board approved to submit a bid to host a regional or state tournament, a calendar change, a classified pay change and substitute bus mechanic pay during their meeting Monday, Dec. 10.

The board approved for the school district to bid to host the regional and state tournaments at Bison Arena.

“It helps playing on the home court,” Clark said about hosting the tournament.

However, Clark told board members, that since the district hosted the regional tournament last year, he wasn’t for sure if the district would get to host it again, since most of the time, the tournaments are rotated every year.

The board approved to change the district calendar to extend the second quarter by two days due to the missed school days, because of the ice/sleet.

Clark said the second quarter was supposed to end Dec. 20, but now will end Jan. 8, 2014, with the third quarter beginning Jan. 9.

The board approved and adopted the 2014 Ten Year Master Plan to be submitted to the Division of the Public School Academic Facilities and Transportation. Clark said there is a formula to compute what they expect the attendance to do every school year.

Right now, Clark told the board, for the school year 2013-14, enrollment is 716 students and it’s expected enrollment will drop over the years and by the school year 2018-19, enrollment will be 665 students for a difference of 51 students. One reason for the expected drop, Clark explained, is that ninth through 12th grades are top heavy with more students and younger grades have less students, so when 9th through 12th grades graduate, attendance will drop.

Clark also said the master plan, called for more handicap parking spaces and that was accomplished when the high school parking lot was paved.

In other business, the board:

•Approved to find an qualified substitute bus mechanic when needed and pay the mechanic $100 per a day.

•Amended the classified employee contracts in cases where the employee is making less than the minimum hourly wage required by the state. The motion stated the amended annual salary will be in accordance to the wage specified by the Arkansas Department of Education.

Clark told board members the snow days would be made up on President’s Day, Feb 17, and now the last day of school would be June 2. He also said finals would be Dec. 18, 19 and 20 and school would be dismissed at 2 p.m. Dec. 18 and 19 and noon Dec. 20. While making rounds checking the schools, Clark told board members, he discovered that due to the weight of the ice, gutters at the high school gym are crushed and the awning is dented. Clark said the district would need to install protective coverings over the gutters.

The next board meeting will be Jan. 13, 2014.
