The Cancer “Adventure” of 2012 — Amy Pearson

This is the fifth in a series of survivor articles leading up to the Relay For Life Celebration in Lonoke on Friday, May 2, at the Gina Cox Center on the Lonoke High School Campus.

My name is Amy Pearson. I was diagnosed with breast cancer on December 16, 2011. When I received the call, after the doctor gave me the news, I jokingly told him he had the wrong number. He didn’t laugh. HA! All the tests, biopsies, blood work and multiple meetings with doctors of every sort began shortly thereafter.

I must be totally honest, while 2012 was a tough year; it was also one of the best years of my life.

I am a wife, mother and now, a grandmother….but first and foremost; I am a child of the Living God. He was and is my rock and my fortress and He showed His peace, love, care, healing and His grace through my “adventure.” God placed a song in my heart from the beginning that I claimed as my theme song “It Is Well With My Soul.” He constantly showed me that He was with me. I had many moments that I can only call “GOD moments” that reassured me that He had gone before me and this battle was His. I discovered many verses that comforted and strengthened me. My favorite during that year was found in Psalms 42:11 “Why art thou cast down oh my soul and why art thou disquieted within me? Hope thou in God; for I shall yet praise Him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.”

My precious husband was the “poster caregiver.” I couldn’t have asked for better. I was convinced he could give classes on how to care for a cancer patient! My family, church family, friends and coworkers were an amazing support group. They rallied around me and took such great care of me and my family. We were overwhelmed with the outpouring of love! I received cards from strangers from Arizona, Pennsylvania, Texas, Florida and Alabama offering prayers and words of encouragement.

I went through several surgeries, eight rounds of chemotherapy and 25 rounds of radiation during the year. I was able to work through the year, only taking off for 2 1⁄2 weeks from major surgery and then a few days following my third surgery. Again, I will say, God was me! My last radiation treatment was on December 13, 2012. Every checkup has come back clear.

God is good, ALL the time!
