The Cabot Panthers wrestling team won the 7A/6A-East conference championship on Saturday at Searcy.
In the process, three-time state champion Tyler Kurz won his 100th match, winning the 182-pound weight class, beating Searcy’s Garrett Dillon by pinfall.
“Tyler Kurz continues being a great leader and wrestler for Cabot,” coach Jason Rogers said. “He recorded his 100th victory at Cabot High Schoo.l That is a very big accomplishment for a wrestler.”
Kurz, who signed with Ouachita Baptist University, is 100-2 during his four-year high school career.
“You can’t have a record like that not be serious about your sport” Rogers said. “As a leader, he is a big part of our success.”
Kurz had losses in his junior and sophomore seasons.
“It is a pretty big accomplishment,” Kurz said of winning his 100th match. “But I’m not worried about my record as long as I’m giving 110 percent all the time.”
Kurz said the Panthers are one of the top teams in the state.
“As I see it right now, we are already one of the top teams in the state but we have to push it harder than ever in practice to win the state title,” Kurz said. “We have to keep working hard in practice, eat right and remain healthy as one can be for the next three weeks.”
Other champions for Cabot include Austin Dye (106), Michael Morgan (126), Eric Cooley (132), Bryce Mitchell (145), Kyle Wheeler (152).
Second-place finishers include: Hayden Mills (113), Drayson Mead (120) and Seth Roberts (160).
Third-place finishers include: Jacob Kurz (138) and Brandon Barrantine (170).
Matt Lemaster finished fourth in the 220-pound weight class.
“We were very proud of all of the wrestlers this week,” Rogers said. “We have continued to get better each day and it showed in our matches. We had 11 of our 13 wrestlers place in the top three. It was a great feeling to see these wrestlers hard work pay off in the conference tournament.”
The Panthers will wrestle in the the Class 6A/7A dual meet at Russellville this weekend. The state tournament is Feb. 22 and 23.
