Cabot High School has been busy with soccer and baseball athletes signing to play with colleges, and added three more students at one signing when Madison Hart, Kaitlin Soderlund and Kristen Sumler all announced they’ll be cheerleaders at Arkansas State University.
All three of the seniors served as captains and co-captains of the varsity cheerleading squad at Cabot this season.
Cheerleading is a little different when it comes to earning a spot on the team in college. Cheerleading coaches don’t go scout for talent. Cheerleaders have to go try out well in advance during the senior high school year.
“I wish they’d come recruit us,” said Hart. “That would be pretty cool. But no, you have to go try out.”
Cheerleading wasn’t the reason the girls chose Arkansas State, but comes as a bonus after choosing to go there for the academics.
“We had already decided to go there, but decided to try out too,” said Soderlund. “We’ll all have different roommates, but we’ll be in the same dorm.”
Hart and Soderlund will be a part of the Red Wolves co-ed squad, while Sumler will be on the all-girl squad.
Hart plans on studying communication, while Soderlund and Sumler are looking at biology and mental health fields, respectively.
