The Cabot Junior High South Panthers got back on the winning track last week with a 24-16 win over the Little Rock Catholic Junior Rockets.
Cabot South looked like they might run away with the game, controlling the lines and leading 16-0 in the third quarter.
The Panthers scored on their opening possession when Jeremy Marshall rushed in for a 5-yard touchdown. Marshall finished his night with 100 yards and all three touchdowns. Jarrod Barnes rushed for 112 yards and scored three two-point conversions.
South didn’t score again until the third quarter, but the defense shut down the Rockets. A short touchdown gave the Panthers a 16-0 lead early in the third quarter.
The Rockets suddenly mounted a quick comeback, scoring on a 40-yard pass, then blocking a punt and scoring soon after to tie the game 16-16 with five minutes left to play.
A long kickoff put the Panthers back on the 5-yard line to start their game-winning drive. Austin Morse had some tough runs during the drive, while Marshall came through with a strong run on fourth down near the endzone for the winning score.
“That’s the best win this group has ever had,” said coach Lee Melder. “The offensive line did a great job and they found a way to win at the end when they had to.”
South travels to Little Rock on Thursday to play the Central Tigers. Game time is 7 p.m.
