The Cabot Lady Panthers weren’t very gracious hosts to West Memphis on the softball diamond, sending the Lady Blue Devils packing early with a 16-1 win.
Cabot scored four runs in the first, took a dominating lead with seven runs in the second inning, then ended game by the mercy rule with five more runs in the fourth.
In the first inning, Kaitlyn Thompson scored the first run after a single, stolen base and a passed ball. Heather Hill reached on a fielder’s choice, followed by a single from Brandyn Vines and a walk to Kaitlyn Felder. Molly Wood stroked a double that cleared the bases and gave the Panthers a 4-0 lead.
The second inning saw Cabot score seven consecutive runs, blowing the game wide open. After a ground ball out to first, Taylor Anderson singled, Thompson reached on an error, Hill singled, Vines singles, Felder reached on a fielder’s choice, Wood cracked another double, and Rachel Allgood reached on an error as all came around to score.
A quiet third inning led into an even harder-hitting fourth inning. The Lady Panthers sent six batters to the plate and got five hits, an error and five runs to end the game by the mercy rule at 16-1. Anderson, Thompson, Allgood and Payton Steadman all singled, while Wood stayed red-hot with her third double of the game.
Defensively, the Lady Panthers and starting pitcher Felder set the Lady Blue Devils down in order each inning except the third. Three walks in the third - two on full counts - along with West Memphis’ only hit of the game earned the visitors their lone run of the contest. Felder fanned six over four innings while earning the win.
