Cabot police shoot wayward cow

According to a Cabot Police Department report, officers were forced Thursday afternoon to shoot an escaped cow that defeated attempts to recapture it. The incident occurred adjacent to the grounds of Southside Elementary School, shortly after school dismissed for the day, near the intersection of Arkansas Highways 321 and 89.

“[The cow] was running in and out of traffic and nearly caused a couple of accidents. The owner saw the liability issues and asked that we put [the cow] down as soon as we could,” Cabot Police Department spokesman Lt. Brent Lucas said Friday.

The police report identified the owner as Jim Roberson. Roberson is the former Lonoke County Sheriff; his term in office ended Dec. 31, 2012, after he chose not to run for re-election.

The report describes the chase as crossing both highways several times before officers killed the cow in an area between Southside Elementary and Fire Station No. 2 on Arkansas Highway 321. Each officer fired once.
