Accident on Highway 5 leaves one dead, three injured

A Cabot man died and three people were injured in a head-on collision Friday on Arkansas Highway 5.

Ernest Smith, 79, of Cabot was pronounced dead at 2:35 p.m. at the hospital, according to a preliminary report from the Arkansas State Police.

William Sellers, 20, of Conway was driving southbound on Arkansas Highway 5 north of Shurley Lane near in a ‘94 Nissan truck at about 7:44 a.m. Friday when he crossed the center line to avoid a wrecker loading another vehicle on the shoulder and struck an ‘07 Toyota Avalon heading northbound, carrying three passengers.

Two of the passengers — Sheila Smith, 58, of Cabot and Noah McBee, 11, of Vilonia — were injured in the accident.

It was raining and road conditions were wet at the time of the accident, which was the 434th fatal accident on Arkansas roadways this year.
