‘Blood moon’

A total lunar eclipse occurred early Tuesday morning. The result was a “blood moon,” which was caused when the moon is entirely immersed in the Earth’s shadow. The blood red color is due to the scattering of sunlight through the edges of the Earth’s atmosphere. This week’s blood moon was the first of four in a year in a half. The others will occur Oct. 8, 2014; April 4, 2015; and Sept. 28, 2015. This photo was taken at approximately 2:15 a.m. (Photo by Mark Buffalo)
