Pilgrim Reflections | ‘Wake up America’

Wake up, America! There’s a “sword in the land!”

That’s the way the prophet Ezekiel described the danger of imminent attack and destruction when he penned Ez. 33:1-33. And, in those verses he called for the “watchman on the wall” to sound the alarm by blowing the trumpet. He also wrote that the blood of the people would be upon his head if he didn’t warn them, but would be spared of their guilt if he did (vv.1-9).

Sadly, the people in Ezekiel’s day didn’t heed the warning, partly because their “shepherds” (pastors) were not doing their jobs (34:1-10). That’s why I’m writing columns like this—because God is sounding the alarm and saying “There’s a sword in the land!”

It’d be easy to only write “feel good,” motivational columns that encourage and lift your spirits. However, in light of all that’s happening right now around us I feel it’s more important to cry “Wake Up, America, before it’s too late!”

Just this past week our headlines were full of the fast movement of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) in Iraq and how they’re overthrowing one city after another. It’s very possible by the time you read this column that they’ll already have gained control of Baghdad.

Needless to say, this is disconcerting and disheartening. When we see the Iraqi military discarding their uniforms, weapons, vehicles, etc.—which we gave them—and fleeing from the al Qaeda insurgents, it both grieves us and makes us wonder if all of our efforts (and lives lost) were in vain.

Likewise, when we see the ill-advised swap of five, leading Islamic terrorist leaders for POW Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl…the hoisting of a rainbow-colored LGBT flag for the first time over the U.S. embassy in Israel…the continued attack on anything Christian in our military and society as a whole…the increasing number of illegal aliens and their children in the U.S. and our failure to obey the rule-of-law…it’s evident that we have a problem. A big problem.

And, dear Reader, it’s only going to get worse unless we wake up.

Or, even more, fall down on our faces before a Holy God and “humble ourselves, pray, seek His Face and turn from our wicked ways” (II Chronicles 7:14).

It seems that bad decisions are being made on every level of government. It seems that common sense has gone out the window and is being replaced by consensus and compromise. It seems that our nation has turned so inward that we no longer know how to fall downward and look upward.

That’s why we must wake up, America!

We must pray as never before. It’s time for pastors and churches to quit “playing church” and heed God’s clarion call to repentance. We must cease worrying about baptisms, buildings and budgets and start crying out for God’s Mercy and Forgiveness before it’s too late.

Too long have we buried our heads in the sands of illusion and self-deceit, somehow believing we’re still “one nation under God.” The truth is that we’ve turned our backs on Him and deceived ourselves into believing that all is well.

But, it’s not, dear Reader. Far from it.

Therefore, let me encourage you—yea, beseech/beg you—to go talk to your pastor, priest, spiritual leader, etc., and plead with him/her to hear/heed this “call to fall.” Truly, “there’s a sword in the land” and woe to those who ignore the warning.

Here’s praying our President, Congress, military leadership, governors, state legislators, pastors, etc., will take seriously this call. Turn off the television. Put away the I-Phone, I-Pad, Kindle, tablet, etc., and fall on your face before a Holy God. Judgment is coming and it is sure.

“There’s a sword in the land.”

Rise up, O men and women of God. The hour is late, but not too late. May God have mercy on us all.
