On Demons, Darkness and Depravity

It is covert, subversive and unceasing.

Spiritual warfare.

Although there are an increasing number of “enlightened” individuals who scoff at such things – and mock those who do believe – the fact remains that spiritual warfare is real. And, if you look around you, you will readily realize its reality.

Take for instance the couple out in Las Vegas who walked into a pizza restaurant last Sunday and shot two policemen to death at point-blank range. Then, they ran across the street to a Wal-Mart, killed a customer at the entrance, and then fled to the back of the store where they committed suicide when police arrived.

Their motive?

None – other than the fact that they were evidently involved in a white supremacist group and heavily into conspiracy theories.

Regardless, three innocent people are dead because of their depraved, deranged behavior. And, I am convinced that this is just another example of rampant, demonic activity in our country. This lets me know the devil – the evil one – Satan – Lucifer – whatever name you call him, realizes his time here on earth is growing increasingly short.

And, in the coming days we are going to see such senseless acts increase as the forces of evil ramp up their attacks.

The Bible talks about such things in II Timothy 3:1-5a, which says “In the last days perilous times will come – for men will be lovers of themselves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, un-thankful, unholy, without natural affection, truce breakers, false accusers, having no self-control, fierce, despisers of those that are good, traitors, heady, high-minded, lovers of pleasure more than lovers of God, having a form of Godliness, but denying the Power thereof…”

Reads like the headlines of this morning’s newspaper, doesn’t it?

But, we should not be surprised – especially in light of Jesus’ teaching on the Last Days (Matthew 24:1-25:46), Paul’s description in the above passage and Peter’s forecast in II Peter 2:1-3:7.

In describing the Last Days, Jesus said “As it was in the days of Noah so shall it also be in the days preceding the coming of the Son of Man” (Matt. 24:37). And, in Genesis 6:5 we read how things were in Noah’s day: “And God saw the wickedness of man was great in the earth and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.”

Thus, in light of the couples’ killing spree in Las Vegas and the increasing number of shootings in school, it is clear what is going on: spiritual warfare. Even though the perpetrators of these hideous acts knew full well what they were doing, it is clear God had “turned them over to a reprobate (perverse/perverted) mind” (Romans 1:28).

Simply put, those who do such things are definitely demonic in their actions. Their minds – though influenced by drugs, drink, hatred, etc. – are darkened and depraved. And, it is clear the “god of this world, the prince of the power of the air” (II Corinthians 4:4; Ephesians 2:2) is alive and well on Planet Earth and “taking many captive at his will” (II Tim. 2:26).

So, what should we do?

Thankfully, we are to prepare ourselves for spiritual warfare by trusting the Lord and “wearing the full Christian Armor” (Eph. 6:10-18). Second, we should stay focused and faithful in the Walk of Faith, which will keep us from fear and despair (II Tim. 3:13-14; Hebrews 12:2). Third, we should get in the Battle and actively wage war against these evil forces of darkness, seeking to rescue as many as we can from certain Judgment.

And, above all, we should always be ready, “for in such an hour as you think not the Son of Man comes” (Mt. 24:42, 44). Are you ready?
